What if resilience wasn’t something you’re born with, but something you could train?

In Resilience is a Muscle, Laurie Carey; CEO, educator, and mother of four, reveals how the science of the brain holds the key to enduring life’s hardest moments and emerging stronger. Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, and lived experience, this book breaks down how we process stress, fear, loss, and change — and how we can retrain the mind to recover faster, stay clear under pressure, and lead with strength.

Turning Pages into Pathways

When you buy this book, you support We Connect The Dots.

We Connect The Dots is a nonprofit organization focused on building real career pathways into technology and the workforce. We work with students and young adults to help them gain practical skills, industry exposure, and the confidence to step into careers they may not have otherwise had access to.

For years, this work has continued while relying heavily on unpredictable government funding. Some years were strong. Others required stretching every dollar. The mission stayed the same but long-term impact requires long-term stability.

That’s part of why this book exists.

Purchasing Resilience is a Muscle helps us build a more sustainable model - one that can fund operations, train future talent, and continue delivering workforce development and resilience programs where they’re needed most.

If you believe in expanding opportunity and strengthening communities, this is one way to be part of it.

Closing the gap between education and opportunity in a digital world.

About the Author

Laurie Carey is a CEO, educator, resilience coach, and technologist who has worked through every major wave of technological change - from mainframes and early networking to the rise of the internet, cybersecurity, and now artificial intelligence.

She is the Founder & CEO of Nebula Professional Development Academy (Nebula Academy) and the Founder of We Connect The Dots, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to helping young people and adults build real career pathways in technology and beyond, especially those who haven’t always had access to opportunity.

Over more than 40 years in technology and business, including a decade at Microsoft, Laurie has led companies, navigated acquisitions, built international teams, and guided thousands of learners and leaders. She is a Harvard Business School alumna, a certified neuroscience-based coach, and a member of the National Speakers Association.

Her work focuses on something simple but often overlooked: how people stay steady when everything around them is changing. She brings together neuroscience, emotional regulation, and practical technical skills to help people stay functional, capable, and clear-headed under pressure.

Laurie doesn’t write from theory. She has raised four children while building companies, carried personal loss and financial strain, and led teams through uncertainty. The principles in this book come from lived experience and from years of helping others navigate change without losing themselves in the process
